Technology Extrusion

Extrusion is a process of shaping a material using a mold (a particular shape required by the final product). The material will be pushed through the die, and then the machine will create an object with continuity. This technology is applied in a large number of industries such as food, plastic and metal production.

What is plastic extrusion?

Plastic extrusion started centuries ago and is now one of the most popular methods of plastic production. The plastic will be melted into a liquid and poured into a mold to form a continuous object. Depending on the shape of the die, people use different types of plastic extrusion molds to create different products.

Plastic extruders are a cost-effective solution thanks to their high capacity and low tooling costs. This method is extremely suitable for manufacturing plastic parts with suitable wall thicknesses. Besides, it can also create profiles that are wider and longer than those produced by other processing methods. In daily life, we easily find a lot of items produced from extrusion machines such as plastic straws, plastic pipes, plastic sheets, shaped plastic bars.

Extrusion blown film
This method is most suitable for the production of food bags, shopping bags and sheets. The plastic granules will be melted and cooled somewhat before leaving the mold. The plastic then turns into a semi-solid material. The air pressure then expands the semi-solid to the desired size and thickness.

Sheet/film extrusion
The sheet/film extrusion method is quite similar to the blown film method. However, since the final product has to be thicker (compared to blown film extrusion), instead of blowing the material, the material is subjected to a process of drawing and rolling to obtain the desired shape.
When rolling, the plastic will be cooled and solidified. We can find products made from this method in real life such as ice cream boxes, juice boxes, wine boxes and thicker plastic packaging types.

Pipe Extrusion
Pipe extrusion is the perfect method for producing long pipes, conduit and other similar items. In general, it becomes more difficult to handle empty equipment. When the plastic reaches the mold, the extruder pushes a pressure inside the material to create a hollow part.

How are different bioplastics produced?

As the world becomes increasingly concerned about the negative impact of plastic waste on the environment, bioplastics have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional petrochemical-based plastics.
